Marathon Township has installed a new ballot drop box to replace the one that was destroyed.
It is a drive-up box and is easily accessible from your car window. I recommend that at this date, you bring your absentee ballot to the township and drop it off, rather than send it in the mail.

You are still welcome to bring the ballot into the office and hand deliver it, if you feel more comfortable with that.

There is still time to request an absent voter ballot. If interested, call Dawn or Amanda at 793-2002 and we will get you set up.

                                          ELECTION NEWS

The Clerk’s Office has been awarded a grant in the amount of $5000.00 from the Center for Tech and Civil Life (CTCL)

The monies from the grant will be used to provide staffing, training and the equipment necessary to facilitate safe and efficient election operations. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic has strapped election budgets and added stress for Election Officials and Election Inspectors, working on Election Day. Our absent voter requests have tripled for this election, compared to the 2016 Presidential Election.

The grant will help purchase personal protection equipment for staff, poll workers and voters, provide temporary staff support, purchase ballot drop boxes to facilitate drive through ballot drops and obtain absentee voting equipment or supplies.

We want Marathon Township voters to have the upmost confidence that their local election office is leading a voting process that is trustworthy and inclusive for all.

Feel free to call Dawn or Amanda @ 810-793-2002 with any election questions you may have.

It is critical that voters follow the instructions provided with their absent voter ballot or the instructions included in the ballot secrecy sleeve, if voting in person.

Following are the options for voting your ballot in the November 3rd Election.

  • “Straight Ticket” Voting:  Voters may vote in the straight party race and select the party of their choosing. This will award votes up to the maximum allowed for each partisan race for the voter’s chosen party. All candidates in the chosen party receive indirect votes based on the voter’s straight party selection. If the voter wishes to vote in any non-partisan races and on proposals, the voter must make selections in these races separately.

  • “Split Party” Voting:  Voters may vote in the straight party race and select the party of their choosing, but then vote directly in an individual race by casting a vote for a candidate from a different party, voting for a candidate with no party affiliation or casting a write-in vote. As in straight party voting, voting straight party will cast a vote for all candidates running under that party to the maximum allowed for each race, except where the voter overrides the indirect vote by casting a direct vote for an individual from another party, a candidate with no party affiliation, or a write -in candidate. If the voter wishes to vote in any non-partisan races and on proposals, the voter must make selections in these races separately.

  • “Mixed Ticket” Voting: Voters may decline to vote in the straight party race and directly select candidates of their choice from any party (or no party affiliation and write-ins) up to the maximum allowed for each race.

REMINDERS:

The ballots are two sided. Don’t forget to turn it over and vote the backside of the ballot

If you are voting absentee, be sure to apply your signature to back of the ballot return envelope.

You can return your ballot to the Clerk’s office by placing your ballot in the drop box at the front door of the township hall. When returning your ballots this way, your ballot drops into a locked, secure container inside the building. It is an easy, alternative to sending your ballot though the mail.

You can track your ballot on mi.gov/vote

I am sad to report, the ballot drop box that was installed this past week, in the township parking lot was vandalized or had an unfortunate encounter with a vehicle. At any rate, it was damaged beyond repair on October 2nd.  Please be advised, the ballots in the drop box were found intact and were not compromised in anyway.  I have tried to contact anyone whose ballot was in the drop box to let them know their ballots are fine.  If you have any concerns about your ballot, please call me or Amanda at 810-793-2002. Office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Lapeer County Sheriff is investigating the incident and I have contacted the Michigan Bureau of Elections to see what the protocol is for moving forward.

The ballot drop box was purchased with a grant through the Bureau of Elections. It was meant to give township voters an easily, accessible way to drop off their ballots without leaving their vehicle and a simple alternative to dropping them in the mail.

PLEASE NOTE: We still have the drop box, as always, at the front door of the township hall, which drops into a securely, locked container inside the building.

NOVEMBER 3RD ELECTION NEWS

If you would like to vote absentee for the November 3rd Election, contact Dawn or Amanda at (810)793-2002 to request an application.  You can return your voted ballot to the drop box at the front door of the township hall.  It drops into a securely locked container inside the building.

Once you have returned your absent voter ballot, you can track it by visiting mi.gov/vote.
If you plan to mail your absentee ballot back to the Clerks office, it is advisable to mail it by October 19th, to allow plenty of time for it to arrive.

If you plan to come into the polls to vote on Election Day, please understand the wait time for voting could be longer than normal.  There will be fewer polling stations available, due to following social distance guidelines for Covid-19.  We will also be limiting the number of voters allowed into the polls at one time.  The ballots are long and detailed and could take up to 20 minutes to complete.  Please plan your time for voting accordingly, based on these factors.
Please be considerate of others and wear a mask when entering the polling station to vote in person.

If you have any questions about the voting process, please feel free to call Dawn or Amanda at 810-793-2002. We are here to serve you and your election needs. Our office is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, but we are often here after hours, attending to election duties.  If we are here, we will gladly assist you.
